The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme invites third level graduates from overseas to participate in international exchange and foreign language education throughout Japan .  Established in 1987, the programme has earned a high reputation, both in Japan and overseas, for its progress in social and cultural exchange, and has become one of the largest exchange programmes in the world.  As of July 2009, there were over 4,436 international participants from 36 countries on the programme.

The JET Programme seeks to enhance internationalisation in Japan by promoting mutual cultural understanding between Japan and other countries. The goal of the programme is to intensify foreign language education in Japan, and to prompt international exchange at the grass roots level by fostering ties between Japanese citizens and JET participants.

The JET Programme is implemented by local authorities within Japan, in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (the Three Ministries) and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR).

Ireland became a participating country in the JET Programme in 1988. Since then over 880 Irish people have contributed to and enjoyed the programme. 48 Irish JETs departed for Japan this year, and a total of 126 Irish JETs are currently living and working in Japan (as of July 2009). Irish JETs act as ambassadors for Ireland, introducing all aspects of Irish culture to the Japanese people. Having worked in Japan on the JET Programme, past Irish JETs have found that this greatly enhances their career opportunities.
