The JET Programme is implemented by local authorities within Japan, in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (the Three Ministries) and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR). Ireland became a participating country in the JET Programme in 1988. Since then over 880 Irish people have contributed to and enjoyed the programme. 48 Irish JETs departed for Japan this year, and a total of 126 Irish JETs are currently living and working in Japan (as of July 2009). Irish JETs act as ambassadors for Ireland, introducing all aspects of Irish culture to the Japanese people. Having worked in Japan on the JET Programme, past Irish JETs have found that this greatly enhances their career opportunities.
