Spouse of a Japanese national visa

Application with Certificate of Eligibility

For the purpose of a long-term stay, it is recommended that your sponsor in Japan start by applying to the nearest   Regional Immigration Bureau to have a Certificate of Eligibility issued.
 

  1. Valid passport
  2. One visa application form [sample], completed and signed
  3. One passport-sized photograph approx. 35mm x 45mm
  4. Original Certificate of Eligibility

 
Application without Certificate of Eligibility
 

  1. Valid passport
  2. Garda National Immigration Bureau/GNIB Registration Card (non-EEA nationals only)
  3. One visa application form [sample], completed and signed
  4. One passport-sized photograph approx. 35mm x 45mm
  5. One official copy of the Japanese spouse’s Family Register (戸籍謄本)showing the marriage registration
  6. Original of applicant’s marriage certificate
  7. Letter of guarantee ( Japanese or  English) from the Japanese spouse (in cases that a Japanese spouse is not residing in Japan, a letter of guarantee from someone in Japan, preferably a Japanese relative)
  8. The Japanese spouse’s passport. If the Japanese spouse is living in Japan, an official copy of the Japanese spouse’s Certificate of Residence (住民票)and a photocopy of the Japanese spouse’s passport
  9. Applicant’s recent bank statements (last 3 months) OR Certificate of Income of the guarantor in Japan

Application with Certificate of Eligibility

  3. One passport-sized photograph approx. 35mm x 45mm
  4. Original Certificate of Eligibility

 
Application without Certificate of Eligibility
 

  1. Valid passport
  2. Garda National Immigration Bureau/GNIB Registration Card (non-EEA nationals only)
  3. One visa application form [sample], completed and signed
  4. One passport-sized photograph approx. 35mm x 45mm
  5. One official copy of the Japanese parent’s Family Register (戸籍謄本)
  6. Original of applicant’s birth certificate
  7. Letter of guarantee ( Japanese or  English) from someone in Japan, preferably a Japanese relative
  8. Applicant’s recent bank statements (last 3 months) OR Certificate of Income of the guarantor in Japan

 
In some cases, additional supporting documents may be required.
Application with Certificate of Eligibility: It normally takes 2-3 working days to issue a visa.
Note: Certificates of Eligibility expire 3 months after the date of issue.
Application without Certificate of Eligibility: It normally takes 5 working days to issue a visa.
 
*Within 14 days of moving into an address in Japan, the spouse or child of a Japanese national visa holder (with the exception of 15 days and 3 months visa holders) must apply for Resident Registration at a local government office near to where he/she is living.
