[14-13] IRELAND-JAPAN SOCIAL SCIENCE SYMPOSIA - “Sharing knowledge, shaping the future of the welfare society in Europe and Japan”
The second Ireland-Japan Social Science Symposium will be held between 10.00 and 17.00 on Friday, 19 September at the Chester Beatty Library (CBL), Dublin Castle.
A welcome address will be given by Professor Andrew J. Deeks, President, UCD, and Mr Chihiro Atsumi, Ambassador of Japan, followed by an introduction by Dr Niamh Hardiman, Director, Public Policy Programme, UCD.
This is a joint project between UCD and the University of Tokyo (UT), primarily funded by the Japan Foundation. The project aims to bring together research communities across various social science disciplines in Ireland and Japan. Participants also include practitioners, policy makers and the general public who face common challenges in the future welfare society.
The project has three main objectives:(i) to understand the current situation in society in Ireland, Europe and Japan with regard to demographics, family structures, population health and policy initiatives in those areas,(ii) to identify common issues and challenges in various social policy domains and learn from each other’s experiences, and(iii) to identify gaps in the current research and find opportunities for further institutional collaboration between UCD and UT and beyond.
In order to achieve these goals, two one-day public symposia are being held in Tokyo and Dublin. The first symposium was held at the UT in June, followed by the upcoming second symposium at the CBL in September. The themes covered by the symposia include housing policy, family policy, maternity care services, fiscal foundations of welfare services, and medical innovation and its impact on society.
The ultimate goal of the project is to inform the public of contemporary society in Ireland and Japan, share research evidence in the domain of social policy from a comparative perspective, and open the door to a deeper understanding of the two countries.
Last year, Prime Minister Abe and the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD exchanged reciprocal visits, making 2013 a special year in the history of the relationship between our two countries. The joint declaration entitled a “Partnership for Innovation and Growth” issued by the two leaders at the end of the year resolved to deepen not only trade, investment and research collaboration, but also people to people exchange and education exchange. This project is also part of the follow-up to the declaration by the two leaders.
The Dublin symposium is hosted by the Public Policy Programme, College of Human Sciences, UCD, and sponsored by the Japan Foundation, CBL and UCD (School of Applied Social Science, Geary Institute, Sutherland School of Law), and supported by the Embassy of Japan in Ireland, Experience Japan, the Ireland Japan Association and various other institutions.
