3 February – Ireland Japan Association (IJA) Annual Dinner

The IJA Annual Dinner was held in Dublin. With this year also marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mary Mitchell O’Connor, who visited Japan in November 2016, attended and the event was a great success.
 
9 February “W.B. Yeats and the Noh Tradition” Commemorative Stamp Issue

In the same year that we are celebrating 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland, An Post issued a commemorative stamp based on “At the Hawk’s Well”, a play created by Irish Nobel Prize laureate W.B. Yeats that is said to have been influenced by the Japanese theatrical art form of Noh.
 
17 February Bob Jackson Lecture

At EPIC-The Irish Emigration Museum, Bob Jackson, the author of “A Doctor’s Sword” and the producer of the documentary film of the same name which is a biography of Dr. Aidan MacCarthy who became a prisoner of war of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, gave a lecture. The talk about the life of Dr. MacCarthy, who enlisted as a doctor in the British Royal Air Force and was in Nagasaki when the atomic bomb was dropped on the city, left a deep impression on the audience who attended.
 
18 February Presentation Ceremony of Japanese Translations of Irish Literary Works to Dublin City Public Libraries

At the Central Library in Dublin, a presentation ceremony of 106 Irish literary works published in Japan was held and Ambassador Miyoshi handed the books over to Brendan Teeling, Deputy City Librarian. The donation was coordinated by Professor Akiko Manabe, Shiga University, with the support of the Japan Book Corner Project and by calling on 6 groups in Japan (The Japan Ireland Society, IASIL Japan (International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures), The Yeats Society of Japan, The James Joyce Society of Japan, The Oscar Wilde Society of Japan, and the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum) for assistance.
 
24 February Lecture and Demonstration about Noh Masks by Hideta Kitazawa

A lecture and demonstration by Hideta Kitazawa about the methods used to make Noh masks was held at Dublin City University (DCU).
