[17-07] Talks with Ireland on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

1  On March 22nd, Mr. Kazutoshi Aikawa, Director-General of Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department visited Ireland and met with Mr. Barrie Robinson, Political Director, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Ms. Helena Nolan, Director, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Unit.
 
2   The meetings took place as a follow-up to the Japan-Ireland bilateral Foreign Ministerial meeting which was held on March 1st in Tokyo.  Minister Fumio Kishida and Minister Charles Flanagan, then agreed at that meeting to strengthen cooperative relations and to continue constructive discussions between the two countries for their mutual goal of a ‘world free of nuclear weapons’, on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Japan-Ireland diplomatic relations.
 
3  At the meetings, Mr. Aikawa and his Irish counterparts discussed broad range of regional and global issues ranging from North Korea’s nuclear missile program to preparatory process of the 2020 NPT review conference, negotiations for nuclear weapons ban treaty, and a Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty.
