1 July – JET Programme Participants Pre-Departure Orientation and Farewell Reception

At the Ambassador’s official residence, with former Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mrs. Atsuko Toyama in attendance, a pre-departure orientation for Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme participants and a farewell reception marking the 30th anniversary of Ireland’s participation in the JET Programme were held.

    


7-10 July H.I.H. Princess Takamado Visits Ireland

During her visit to Ireland, Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado made a courtesy call on President Michael D. Higgins, attended an event at the Chester Beatty Library to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland and was guest of honour at a dinner hosted by Minister for Justice and Equality Mr. Charles Flanagan, T.D. In addition, she also visited LauraLynn Children’s Hospice in Dublin and Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Gardens in Tramore. 

    
 
12 July Opening of The Dolls of Japan Exhibition

At the Cervantes Institute in Dublin, Ambassador Miyoshi attended the opening of the Japan Foundation’s “The Dolls of Japan” travelling exhibition. The exhibition runs until 9 August.

    


22 July Departure of JET Programme Participants

40 Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme participants safely departed Dublin Airport. Counting two early departees who took up their posts in April, this year sees 42 JETs from Ireland taking part in the programme. We wish them a fulfilling time in Japan.
 
25-29 July Kyogen Performances in Dublin, Sligo and Waterford

To mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland, the renowned Shigeyama Sengoro Family of the Okura School of Kyogen performed “The Cat and the Moon” by W.B. Yeats, “Chin Chin Kobakama” by Lafcadio Hearn and the traditional kyogen play “Kani Yamabushi” at Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin (25 July), Blue Raincoat Theatre, Sligo (27 July) and Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford (29 July) and were well received by Irish audiences.  
 
27 July JRA Tyros Stakes

At Leopardstown Racecourse, the Tyros Stakes were held with Ambassador Miyoshi in attendance along with officials from Japan Racing Association (JRA). 
 
30 July Mr. Bon Koizumi and Mrs. Shoko Koizumi Awarded Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation

For their efforts over the course of many years in fostering friendly relations between Japan and Ireland, Mr. Bon Koizumi and Mrs. Shoko Koizumi were awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation. The ceremony took place at the Embassy of Japan after the three kyogen performances had concluded.
