Press Release [21-01] - Ms Agnes Aylward Awarded with Commendation of Foreign Minister of Japan

On 20 August 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced that Ms Agnes Aylward, Chairperson and Founder, Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens, Tramore, Co. Waterford, has been awarded with the Commendation of the Foreign Minister of Japan. This decision was made in recognition of Ms Aylward’s outstanding contribution to the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and Ireland. This year, 177 individuals and 41 groups worldwide received this recognition. The recipients will be presented with an award certificate.

Ms Agnes Aylward is Chairperson and Founder of the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens, which were established in Tramore in June 2015, when she was a Board Member of the Tramore Development Trust. Making use of the network and experience from her career at the Department of the Taoiseach and other public and academic institutions, Ms Aylward achieved the successful opening of the Gardens. Since then, the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens have been visited by VIPs, and have held many Japan-related programmes to promote mutual understanding between Japan and Ireland. Ms Aylward also acted as a main guide during Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado’s visit to the Gardens in July 2017.

The Commendations of the Foreign Minister of Japan are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in order to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.
