The Embassy of Japan in Ireland is pleased to advise that on 1 August 2024 the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendations for FY 2024 and held the awarding ceremony on 8 August.
The Foreign Minister’s Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries and areas. The Commendations also aim to promote the understanding and support of the Japanese public for the activities of the recipients.
This year, Commendations are being awarded to 186 individuals and 59 groups around the world.
We are pleased to announce that the following individual from Ireland has been awarded a Commendation in recognition of his contribution to promoting Japanese culture in foreign countries:
Translator and Writer Mr Peter MacMillan
Having lived in Japan for over 30 years, Mr MacMillan has contributed to raising awareness of Japanese classical literature both at home and abroad. He has translated works such as Hyakunin Isshu and Manyoshu into English, and is actively promoting these works to the world, including their historical and cultural background. His English translation of Hyakunin Isshu won the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture Special Award for the Translation of Japanese Literature and the 44th Special Cultural Translation Prize from the Japan Society of Translators. As JICA's first cultural lecturer, he has promoted Japanese culture overseas and taught in the fields of Japanese literature and culture at Japanese universities, making a wide range of contributions to academic exchange both in Japan and abroad, as well as helping to promote understanding of Japanese culture overseas through literature.
