On 20 January, Japanese Ambassador MIYAGAWA Manabu paid a courtesy call on Mr. Joe Hackett, Secretary General at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.  

Constructive exchanges of views took place on possible ways and means to further deepen bilateral relations, building upon what has been achieved by the people of Ireland and Japan up until now.   

Toward the 70th anniversary in 2027 to commemorate the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, they also reaffirmed the importance of the Joint Leaders’ Statement issued between Ireland and Japan in 2022, the latest bilateral summit during the visit by H.E. Mr. Micheál Martin, Taoiseach, to Japan in July 2025, and the Ireland’s participation in EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan amongst other topics. 
 
The Secretary General and Ambassador both recognized the significance of the upcoming EU Presidency of Ireland this year, confirming the importance of close communication between Ireland and Japan in the midst of changing international situations.
