On 3 March, at Leinster House, Ambassador MIYAGAWA Manabu paid a courtesy call on Ms Emer Currie TD, Convenor of the Ireland–Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group. The Ambassador expressed his appreciation for the Convenor’s attendance at the Emperor’s Birthday Reception held on 12 February, and they exchanged views on existing exchanges between Japan and Ireland, as well as on the potential for further strengthening of ties in the lead-up to the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2027.

Deputy Currie served as a Senator from 2020 to 2024, during which time she acted as Seanad Spokesperson on Employment, Work–Life Balance and Northern Ireland amongst other important issues. Since her election to Dáil Éireann as a TD for Dublin West in November 2024, she has been actively engaged in a number of committees, including those on Business; Children, Equality, Education and Youth; and Transport. Having assumed the position of Convenor of the Ireland–Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group, she has been working with fellow members to promote relations with Japan within the Oireachtas, drawing on her extensive experience of visits to Japan and exchanges with Japanese friends and colleagues, including her latest visit to Japan in 2023 accompanying then-Ceann Comhairle Mr Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD.

The Embassy of Japan in Ireland intends to continue working closely with Deputy Currie and other members of the Ireland–Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group to further enrich the strong bilateral relationship between the two countries amid changing international situations.
