On 27 March, Dr. Declan M. Downey kindly visited the Embassy of Japan and met with Ambassador MIYAGAWA Manabu and Ms. NAKATA Keiko, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan.
Since 1995, Dr. Downey, a diplomatic historian, has been teaching Japanese History to the students of UCD – the first Irish university to provide Japanese History at degree level. In December 2020, he was awarded the Commendation of the Foreign Minister of Japan for his outstanding contribution to the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and Ireland through promoting Japanese Studies, mentoring young researchers, his role as an Advisor to the Asian Strategy Committee, Department of the Taoiseach (1998-2005), and as a Trustee of Chester Beatty Library & Gallery (2012-2017), and many collaborations with the Embassy of Japan in Ireland in cultural and academic activities.
The Embassy of Japan in Ireland looks forward to working closely with and learning further from Dr. Downey toward the 70th anniversary for the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Japan in 2027.
