On 26 May, Mr MIYAGAWA Manabu, Ambassador of Japan to Ireland, paid a courtesy call on Mr Christopher O’Sullivan TD, Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, during which they exchanged views on trends, challenges, and potential areas for cooperation between Japan and Ireland in the field of biodiversity conservation.
Looking ahead to 2030, Ireland, blessed with rich nature and biodiversity, is actively implementing a plan that the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has assessed as one of the world’s leading biodiversity strategies. Japan, which hosted the 2010 Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10), is likewise implementing a biodiversity strategy incorporating the SATOYAMA Project and a range of other initiatives aimed at enabling harmonious coexistence between people and nature.
Through dialogue with the Minister of State— who was a former Convenor of the Ireland-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group — as well as with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, related organisations, companies, and educational institutions, the Embassy of Japan in Ireland intends to explore opportunities for constructive information exchange and cooperation towards biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in both Japan and Ireland.
