On 10 June, twenty days before Ireland assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Ambassador MIYAGAWA Manabu paid a courtesy call on Mr Darragh O’Brien TD, Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment and Minister for Transport. They exchanged views on the current state of cooperation between Japan and Ireland in the fields of climate change, energy, and the environment, as well as prospects for future collaboration.

Ambassador MIYAGAWA outlined Japan’s forthcoming emissions reduction targets towards achieving net zero by 2050. He noted that Japan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by fiscal year 2035 and by 73% by fiscal year 2040 and explained the Government of Japan’s intention to accelerate investment in the green transition to achieve both decarbonisation and economic growth. He also expressed his expectation that Japan and Ireland would continue to contribute jointly to international efforts through enhanced cooperation between their governments and by promoting business collaboration between companies in both countries.

The Embassy of Japan in Ireland wishes Ireland every success in its forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union and remains committed to making every possible effort to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of climate change, energy and the environment.
