On 6 August, Mr HIROHATA Koji, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Ireland, attended a commemoration in Dublin’s Merrion Square Park, organised by the Irish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima.

In his remarks, he reaffirmed that Japan, as the only country to have ever suffered atomic bombings in wartime, holds a solemn responsibility to convey the realities of  nuclear warfare to the world and to lead international efforts towards the abolition of nuclear weapons. He also emphasised that Hiroshima and Nagasaki must be the final instances of nuclear weapon use in human history.

The ceremony was attended by Lord Mayor of Dublin Daryl Barron, Senator Garret Ahearn, Mr Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD and members of the diplomatic corps amongst others.

The Embassy of Japan in Ireland hopes that this solemn occasion will foster constructive dialogue on disarmament and inspire collective efforts toward a world free from nuclear weapons.
