Japan and Ireland – Cooperation in the Field of Human Rights

On 22 September, Ambassador MIYAGAWA Manabu paid a visit to Mr Kevin McCarthy, Secretary General at the Department of Children, Disability and Equality. They exchanged views on progress to date in cooperation in the field of human rights, as set out in the 2022 Japan-Ireland Joint Leaders’ Statement, taking into account, among other developments, Minister Roderic O’Gorman’s visit to Japan in 2024 and Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton’s visit to Japan in 2025. They also discussed possibilities for further bilateral cooperation.
In light of Japan’s Children’s Charter (2023), Fifth Basic Plan for Persons with Disabilities (2023–2027) and Sixth Basic Plan for Gender Equality (2026), as well as Ireland’s National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People (2025–2030), Young Ireland: National Policy Framework for Children and Young People (2023-2028), and the National Strategy for Women and Girls (2025–2030), the Embassy of Japan in Ireland will continue to work towards keeping and deepening dialogue between the relevant authorities of the two countries, with a view to the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland in 2027.
