Japan and Ireland -cultural and sports exchanges

On 16 September, Ambassador MIYAGAWA Manabu met with Mr Feargal Ó Coigligh, Secretary General of the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport. Mr Ó Coigligh reiterated his condolences on the passing of H.E. Mr SHIMADA Junji, former Ambassador of Japan to Ireland, and shared his positive account of the visit to Japan by Mr Patrick O’Donovan TD, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, in May 2025.
Building on the 2022 Japan–Ireland Joint Leaders’ Statement, and previous engagement between Secretary General Ó Coigligh and Mr FUJIWARA Makoto, then Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan; Ambassador MIYAGAWA and Mr Ó Coigligh exchanged views on ways to further deepen cultural and sports collaboration between Japan and Ireland. Points of discussion included animation, the Japan International MANGA Award, film, music, and sporting fixtures, andthe 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland in 2027.
The Embassy of Japan in Ireland looks forward to working closely with the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport to further promote cultural and sports exchanges between Japan and Ireland.
