On 8 October, Ambassador MIYAGAWA Manabu met with Ms Olivia Leslie, Director General, Multilateral Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). They looked back on the fact that, in their respective national statements at the United Nations General Assembly in September, the Prime Minister of Japan and the Taoiseach had once again underscored the importance of multilateralism in light of the current international situation and referred to the need to reform the United Nations Security Council, among other issues.

The Ambassador also recalled the ceremony marking the Opening of the Legal Year, which was held on 5 October at the Supreme Court in Dublin. Judge AKANE Tomoko, President of the International Criminal Court, and The Hon. Mr Justice Donal O’Donnell, Chief Justice of Ireland, delivered keynote addresses at the ceremony, in which both judges spoke about the importance of the international rule of law. Director General Leslie noted that, on the same day, Ms Helen McEntee, TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, had a constructive exchange of views with Judge Akane.

The Embassy of Japan in Ireland, together with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland, will continue to seize every opportunity to uphold and strengthen multilateralism through diplomacy at the United Nations and other multilateral institutions, and work together towards peace and prosperity in the international community.
