9-10 January – Visit to Ireland by Foreign Minister Kishida

Foreign Minister Kishida became the first serving Japanese Foreign Minister to visit Ireland in 26 years. On arrival, he met with Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Flanagan and later took part in the opening ceremony of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland. The following day he paid a courtesy call on Taoiseach. Further details on the visit can be found below.

13 January “School Days”, Tomoko Sawada Photographic Exhibition
“School Days”, a photographic exhibition by Tomoko Sawada supported by the Japan World Exposition 1970 Commemorative Fund (JEC Fund), opened at the MART Gallery. The exhibition continues until 24 February
 
20 January New Year Reception

The annual New Year Reception was held at the Ambassador’s residence and approximately 120 guests, mainly comprising Japanese residents in Ireland, attended. Following opening remarks by Ambassador Miyoshi and Mr Ozaki, President of the Japan Business Society in Ireland, the invited guests enjoyed the evening. This year photographic panels about the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland were displayed.

   
 
 
20-22 January Akumakon

The anime and cosplay event “Akumakon” was held at NUI Galway and anime singer Aya Ikeda performed live.
 
23 January Lecture by Keio University Professor Sayuri Shirai

Keio University Professor Sayuri Shirai, a former Bank of Japan (BOJ) board member, gave a lecture entitled “Japanese Economy and Monetary Policy” explaining the current situation regarding Japan’s economic recovery at Ibec, Ireland’s leading business organisation.

 
24 January Lecture by Acting Director-General of Japan Institute for International Affairs Shingo Yamagami

Acting Director-General of Japan Institute for International Affairs Shingo Yamagami gave a lecture on “Shifts of Power: Security in the East Asia & the South Pacific” explaining the recent security situation in Asia at Trinity College Dublin.
 
26-27 January Eco-Urbanites Symposium

Eco-Urbanites Symposium, funded by the Japan Foundation, was held at Trinity College Dublin. A number of researchers from Japan participated and they explained efforts that were being made to create residential environments that tackled the issues facing modern Japanese society, such as ageing population.
 
27-29 January Holiday World Show Exhibition

At the Holiday World Show held in Dublin, a stand promoting tourism to Japan exhibited. At the opening ceremony, Ambassador Miyoshi together with Mr. Shane Ross TD, the Minister with responsibility for tourism, and Miss Ireland (Visit Japan Tourism Ambassador) participated in a sake barrel opening ceremony.
